The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) rules state it is up to you to make sure that your water is safe to drink, and The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) recommends well owners test their water at least annually for bacteria, nitrates, and any contaminants of local concern.

Your bare eyes cannot see the harmful bacteria, parasites, and infections that could be lurking in your drinking water.

At a minimum, its recommended that private well owners check your water every spring to make sure there are no mechanical problems; test it once each year for total coli-form bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, pH levels or other harmful pollutants. If you suspect other contaminants, you should test for those as well. Reasons for sampling water from your well include:

  • There are known problems with well water in your area
  • You have experienced problems near your well (i.e., flooding, land disturbances, and nearby waste disposal sites)
  • Replacing or repairing our your well system
  • There is a change in water quality (i.e., taste, color, odor)
  • Always when purchasing or selling a home with an existing or new well

Why you may need to test your well more than once per year:•

  • Someone in the household is pregnant or nursing
  • Unexplained illnesses in the family
  • Neighbors find a dangerous contaminant in their water
  • Finding a sudden change in water taste, odor, color, or clarity
  • There has been a spill of chemicals or fuels into or near a well

Health Care Water Testing Recommendation provides one with ample proof of the importance of knowing what is in your water.

Most wells do not get their water from underground rivers, but instead get the water from aquifers. Aquifers are layers of rock and soil with water flowing through their small pores, and new water, such as from rain or melting snow, drips down into the ground through the pores and cracks in the rocks and soil.

Along the way your water can pick up harmful contaminants that you could be drinking. Its imperative for the health of you and your family that your water is pure and free of pollutants.
